A parliamentary committee has urged the Pakistan Television (PTV) administration to bring impartiality and quality to its news and current affairs programmes in order to attract viewers’ attention and compete with private television channels.

Largely it is believed that PTV, being a public-sector organisation, always tries to project positive image of the government and hardly criticises it for its bad governance.

As a result news programmes of private television channels have grabbed the market and PTV, despite having largest network in the country, has been lagged far behind.

Given an option viewers would always go for private television channels when it comes to news or current affairs programmes to get impartial and authentic view point on any given situation.

PTV being a terrestrial channel has the advantage of massive outreach in the every nook and corner of the country. However with the advent of private television channels available on cable networks in urban areas, its market share has been significantly cut down.

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting met at the PTV headquarters here on Wednesday. The meeting was chaired by MNA Belum Husnain.

The committee also directed officials of the national television channel to come up with a highly professional marketing team. PTV needs to launch an aggressive marketing strategy to improve its revenue generation and transform itself into a self sustainable organisation, said the committee members.

In the beginning, committee members were given a briefing by the PTV managing director on the organisation’s overall performance, structure, its revenue sources, present policy and future targets.

The committee assured the PTV administration that it would extend all possible help to the channel so that it could become a more effective and viable organisation. After the meeting, members of the committee visited various sections of the PTV.

PTV Managing Director Arshad Khan, when contacted, said the meeting with the NA standing committee went very well during which its members were briefed about overall working of the organisation and efforts being made to improve quality of its programmes.

About the news and current affairs programmes, Mr Khan said these were being fully revamped to make them competitive and marketable.

“Prime minister and information minister are for a more open PTV, getting rid of its tag of being a mouthpiece of the government,” he responded to a query.

Talking to Dawn, a senior official of the state channel said currently it was running in losses and if given a free hand, the organisation had the potential to turn it into a profitable body.

“Being a public-sector organisation our hands are tied, however, attempts are being made to improve news and current affairs programmes,” the official said.Only recently, Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira has pledged to make the channel a competitive and marketable organisation.

Besides the chairperson, the meeting was attended by Chaudhry Saeed Iqbal, Syed Amir Ali Shah, Pir Syed Fazal Ali Shah Jeelani, Farzana Raja, Samina Mushtaq Pugganwala, Begum Nuzhat Sadiq, Rana Nazir Ahmad Khan, Farhat Mohammad Khan and Istiqbal Khan.
