Cable operators asked not to show ‘indecent programmes’
Published by TV Explore on October 22, 2009
The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has asked cable operators not to telecast ‘indecent programs’ which hurt sentiments of people.
In a press release issued here, PEMRA said it had persistently been receiving complaints that some cable operators were involved in showing vulgar programs and unauthorized Indian content.
Some cable operators were issued show cause notices on Aug 5 and were also warned verbally.
Consequently, on Oct 17 PEMRA conducted a surprise inspection of three cable networks in Lahore and it was observed that in spite of written and verbal warnings, the operators were showing banned Indian channels and indecent foreign language channels, which contained explicit scenes, the press release said.
PEMRA said it was fully committed to facilitating the cable operators but vulgar Indian content could not be tolerated.
Therefore, PEMRA sent its staff to three offending cable operators of Lahore.
The team seized only those equipment which were being used to show indecent content after fulfilling all the legal formalities under the PEMRA rules and regulations.
