The information ministry has served 64 legal notices on 18 private television channels in the last two years for violating the code of conduct formulated by authorities.
According to official documents, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) sought clarification from 18 private television channels for programmes which it said violated the code of conduct agreed to at the time of issuance of licences.
Eighteen legal notices were issued to the Independent Media Corporation — the owner of Geo News — for different reasons, including live coverage of various terrorist attacks, airing of footage showing Taliban releasing hostages, and false reports regarding detention of prominent political personalities.
The Recorder Television Network, which manages Aaj TV, also got many notices. The reasons cited for the notices included: violation of code of conduct during the coverage of a PFUJ press conference, promoting terrorists by interviewing Taliban leader Mullah Umar, using provocative language against the Supreme Court, and use of sensational language during coverage of an attack on the Manawan police training school.
Eight notices were issued to the ARY Communications, mainly for showing gruesome scenes after bomb explosions and use of derogatory language against the Supreme Court.
The Television Media Network (Pvt) Limited, which owns Express TV, received five notices for similar reasons.
The Dawn News, a news and current affairs channel owned by the Pakistan Herald Publications, received four notices — for ‘casting aspersions on the armed forces’, airing visuals of FC men’s beheading, violation of terms and conditions of licence vis-a-vis ‘The First Blast’ programme, and ’sensational coverage of the terrorist attack on a police training school in Lahore.
Dunya TV of the National Communication Services SMC got four notices, two for ‘casting aspersions on the armed forces’ and one each for an interview with Maulvi Umar and coverage of attack on the police training school in Manawan.
Samaa TV channel received four notices, for telecasting details of the budget before its formal announcement and an insensitive programme on the situation in Balochistan, etc.
Other private channels which received one or two legal notices were Din News, Khyber News, Play TV, Sindh TV, Punjab TV, Royal TV, KTN, Channel 5, Waqt TV and Express 24/7.
