Asian satellite operator, Asia Broadcast Satellite (ABS), is launching a low-cost direct-broadcast satellite platform for Pakistan in November this year.
The platform, which has been green-lit by Pakistani regulatory authority PEMRA, will carry about 12 free channels and will be operated on the same basis as Freeview in the U.K., ABS chief executive Tom Choi says. The official announcement is expected soon.
Speaking during the recent Asia Pacific Satellite Communications Council (APSCC) in Kuala Lumpur, Choi said the platform would launch with local channels and expand to international services later. The service will be offered on the KoreaSat-2 satellite, which ABS acquired in July this year from Korea Telecom.
The satellite at 75ºE (co-located with ABS-1) has been renamed ABS-1A, and will be accessible with a 30cm dish. The set-top-box and the dish will cost less than US$50, with no subscription fees. Channels will pay a small amount for carriage; costs have not been finalised, Choi said.

The first Pakistan Media Awards will be held in April 2010 in Karachi. You can vote for your favorite nominations in various categories. Click here for details.
