The Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting on Tuesday called for steps to block the telecast of Indian channels on local cable network.

Members of the meeting, chaired by Senator Haji Ghulam Ali, expressed concern over the free broadcast of Indian TV channels, which they said violated the nation’s cultural values. Senator Tariq Azeem said Pakistani cable networks had been “invaded” by Indian channels, while India had banned all Pakistani channels. Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Syed Sumsam Bukhari assured the committee members that the government would abolish all laws targeting the media that were enacted during the Musharraf era.

The committee was also given a detailed briefing on the mandate, role and challenges faced by the Information Ministry, including Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV), Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC).
