Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (PEMRA) has taken serious notice against those private satellite TV channels which are relaying advertisements beyond the specified limit i.e. 12 minutes per hour.

During the 59th Authority Meeting of PEMRA it was decided that action will be taken against those Private TV channels which are infringing public time against advertisement and depriving viewers of their legitimate right for healthy entertainment.

According to a press release issued by PEMRA it says that monitoring of 28 days transmission of fifteen private satellite TV reveals that channels are blatantly violating Authority’s cap for advertisement. For instance, during 28 days of Oct-Nov, private satellite TV channels were allowed advertisement for 112 hours, whereas, channels relayed advertisement as follows:

Geo News: 171 hrs
Geo Entertainment: 226 hrs
Geo Super: 196 hrs
Aaj News: 114 hrs
ARY Digital: 195 hrs
ARY News: 124 hrs

It was also uttered by the members of the Authority that the quality of programming content is deteriorating day by day hence PEMRA should initiate coercive action including imposition of fine on misreporting and unethical content. The Authority was of the view that advertisements relayed on each channel are actually telecasted on the expense of consumers / masses hence a balance should be maintained between advertisement and programming content as per PEMRA laws.

It was also decided by the Authority that all the defaulters i.e. private satellite TV channels and FM radios should clear their outstanding dues at the earliest, failing which the Authority shall be constraint to take stringent action against the defaulters in accordance with the provisions of PEMRA Ordinance 2002, Rules, Regulations and license terms and conditions.
