Bidding of cable TV licences deferred
Published by TV Explore on February 2, 2010
A meeting with the representatives of Cable Operators Associations of Pakistan was held at PEMRA office on Monday. The meeting was chaired by the Chairman, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Mushtaq Malik in which decided that the bidding for cable TV licenses at district level, announced earlier, is being deferred on the demand of cable TV operators till the determination of number of licenses in each district in consultation with the stakeholders.
The sources revealed the meeting held due to the immense pressure of cable operators on the management of PEMRA. Cable Operators Association of Pakistan (COAP) alleged Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has invited “illegal” bidding of cable operators in various cities for issuing more licenses in the country.
The cable operators all over the country had deposit million rupees to the PEMRA. There is no room for issuing more licenses in the present situation. They demanded the PEMRA should suspend bidding.
Likewise, the PEMRA has invited the bidding of FM radio licenses countrywide. The owners of the FM radios have also demanded the PEMRA to postpone the bidding of phase 8 issuing licenses because we have already facing hard time. They requested the high up of the authority in this regard.
When the Chairman PEMRA was contacted, he said that the bidding of cable TV licenses would be announced later with the consultation of cable operators.
