With cable operators in Punjab (India) not telecasting ESPN-Star Sports following a standoff over payment, cricket fans were in for surprise when the operators relayed Pakistan’s PTV Home channel for showing a World Cup group-stage match today.

Before the start of the World Cup, there had been a tussle between cable operators and ESPN-Star Sports, the Cup”s official broadcaster, that deprived thousands of cricket fans in the region from catching the live action of the matches.

Cricket lovers could only fall back to Doordarshan, which telecast matches featuring India.

Some local cable networks, including Siti and Fastway, had accused the official broadcaster of hiking subscription charges just before the World Cup and switching off the signal.

According to media reports, ESPN had accused these cable operators of not clearing their past dues.

Doordarshan is only telecasting matches featuring India, and has the rights to telecast the semi-finals and the final, leaving cricket-crazy fans no other way to watch the matches.

“It was a pleasant surprise to watch the Pakistan team in action. Yesterday too, the local cable operators had shown some Bangladeshi channel, that beamed their team”s match,” Anurag Dua, a student in a local college, said.
