“At the government’s behest, the Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has ordered Geo Super to stop airing from Pakistan”, claimed Geo TV.

“Geo Super had earned exclusive rights to telecast the cricket World Cup, and the Supreme Court of Pakistan made PEMRA give an undertaking to make sure Geo Super is not disturbed. These orders were not only violated but right after the World Cup was over, PEMRA refused Geo Super permission to air from Pakistan. The government has not issued the uplink license to Geo Super to telecast from Pakistan.”, Geo TV further added.

Meanwhile, Acting Chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Dr Abdul Jabbar Thursday strongly refuted the allegations of Geo TV Network regarding blocking of its sports channel Geo Super. While addressing a press conference at PEMRA Headquarters Dr Jabbar, he said that if PEMRA had blocked the Geo Super channel, its logo would not have been visible on the screen.

He said that if the management of the channel stops uploading the program, the viewers cannot watch the programs.

He said “Geo TV is leveling baseless allegations against the government and the PEMRA regarding blocking of its Geo Super channel.”

He said that neither PEMRA nor the government has any role in blocking its transmission. However Dr Abdul Jabbar said that as per law and the permission the channel has to uplink from Dubai not from Pakistan.

Dr Jabbar said that PEMRA has no technology to block the channel from satellites”, he said adding it is all malicious and baseless propaganda to malign the government and PEMRA and to deceive honorable apex court.

Acting Chairman PEMRA said that recently the Geo Super TV applied for a temporary uploading license, but when they were asked to provide details, they failed to give any detail.

HE said that despite the fact that they have no right to uplink their channel from Pakistan, they clandestinely started uplinking the same from Karachi, which was illegal.

After getting this information, the PEMRA asked the management of Geo Super not to uplink it from Karachi before getting permission to do so, he said.

Dr Jabbar said that instead of following the rules and providing details, the management itself stopped uplinking the programs and has started blaming the PEMRA, which was totally wrong.
