Television artists from across the country on Friday expressed strong concern over the deteriorating state of drama and particularly airing of the Hindi content. The artists who participated in a consultative session with Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani in his initiative ‘PM’s dialogue with the nation’ at the PM Secretariat, strongly deplored the “irresponsible treatment” with drama.

Playwright Haseena Moeen, known for her classics ‘Tanhaiyaan’ and ‘Dhoop Kinaray’ said drama was facing drastic situation in a country which was once being regarded as best in drama-making.

She said drama was being aired in its most distorted form, with soaps dramatized on Indian style showing “unrealistic sari-worn women doing kitchen chores”.

She recalled the olden times when the Pakistan Television had a highly professional team of seasoned artistes, writers, producers and script editors who worked hard to create pieces that are still remembered.

She stressed teaching of manners, ethics, social norms and character-building of young minds through television and stage dramas.
She demanded a check on the trend of use of abusive, loaded and vulgar language.

Senior actor Asif Raza Mir expressed displeasure over the invasion of Hindi culture through television channels. He pointed that a children’s channel was screening Hindi-translated cartoons that was impacting the vocabulary of young minds. He also pointed the use of Indian tune ‘Saas bhi kabhi bahu thi’ in an advertisement being aired by a telecommunication company.

Actors Firdous Jamal and Jamal Shah mentioned the use of uncensored and objectionable Indian content at television channels.
