Too many chefs spoil the broth!
THE 21st century has brought with it a fourth pillar of state. When the United States was founded, it was based on three pillars: executive power, an elected legislature, and an independent judiciary. The fourth pillar is a free media. As the information age has powered ahead, the fourth pillar has become more and more important. These powers are maintained by a system of checks and balances so that no one pillar may overtake the others entirely. A free media is imperative for a democratic state to function. The media serves as a watchdog for its people providing information they may not otherwise have access to or seek out themselves. A free media allows individual citizens to question those in power and use that information to make decisions about their future.
Pakistan’s media, specifically Electronic Media that includes all News and Entertainment Channels, are like so many chefs in the kitchen to cook the broth and they all want their type of taste in it. So in order to let everyone add their taste makers they have spoiled the broth collectively. However to discuss broth, it doesn’t matter either the broth is considered as Pakistan nation, Pakistan’s relations with other countries or Pakistan’s image, the point is that it has been officially spoiled and destroyed brutally. Pakistan’s electronic media has lost their charm because they keep flourishing yellow journalism. They are more into selling news other than thriving truth and promoting the image and respect of the country. Media is an important “State Pillar”; it has great responsibility on its shoulders to express freedom of speech. The freedom has never been handled by the people of Pakistan in any institution and within media itself. It is however, noticeable that the reflection of people’s sentiments and criticism on the government policies, to an extent, expressed well over media.
For a common man, media is playing a suffocating role. Whenever, you switch on your television there is every time emergency situations i.e. breaking news which includes Sania Mirza weds Shoaib Malik or Saif Ali Khan & Kareena Kapoor admitted their relationship. There are so many good things happening in the country, but people rarely see any good news. Electronic media creates a situation and highlight normal matters in a way that it looks like there is an emergency situation in the country. They often violate rules by PEMRA and are so much indulged in maintaining the PR of their channel that they completely forgot that what is good for the prosperity of the country.
Moreover, when it comes to “Talk Shows”, it looks like talk shows are meant to create fights and conflicts. It is very sad to see that the moderator often forgets that he/she is the moderator of the show and his/her main purpose is to handle the offensive situations and clarify the debate topic. Talk Show anchors call people from different fields in their shows and by insulting or disgracing them thinks that they have made their show a big hit or a little bit more popular. On the other hand, talk shows never come up with any solution and its better if politicians/celebrities/religious scholars/socialites avoid wasting time on unending and solution less discussions and apply their times on any productive work/issue.
After talk shows, there comes the “News” that are highly advertised these days. They show/promote news of Bollywood stars and their Indian movies in our most important 9 o’clock headlines and present our political/national news dubbed with Indian songs. Who is required to degrade us or make fun of us when we have such people among us who contain such elements? Pakistan’s News Channels are full of drama and chaos. They make people more depressing by showing dead bodies and negative aspects of life. On a whole, they are making Pakistani nation “A Nation of Psychological Patients”.
Now comes the entertainment part, its all Bollywood phobia that has taken control of our country. On every weekend, there is showed a Bollywood movie with their star cast on every leading Pakistani Channel except PTV. We have programmes like “Hum Sub Ummed Say Hain”, that makes fun of our politicians and major celebrities and it’s been said that people of Pakistan like such programmes where they can make fun of their own elected members, how surprising? Every new Bollywood Award Show is first telecasted on Geo TV or Ary Digital and it’s like their biggest achievement ever. On our traditional/religious occasions a Bollywood movie makes the joy of whole nation double. Our media has so mesmerized the whole nation with Bollywood fever that nothing else than just Bollywood itself overcome it. Now the question is why the media aspect is so negative in this country. It’s good that journalism is all about telling people the truth and providing the right scenarios to them but it’s quite surprising that money matters more than the truth. Media is first a money generating business then it is to tell people the truth. It is so spoiled that without even considering the image of the country they take their channel repute first. They can make everyone in this country accountable but they never feel that the accountability is necessary in their field too.
Media can bring the positive sides of Pakistan. It is the medium from which the whole world is watching us. They can bring the softer image of Pakistan. They can tell the world that there is a nation of 180 million who is facing the worst situations since last 11 years and still no one can beat their courage and dedication towards their country. They can promote tourism in the country and by that they can catch the attention of tourists to Pakistan. Other than making fun of their politicians they can educate the nation to vote for the right person. They have an ability to change the current scenario and paint it green & white. Other than being the bad chefs, they can show that for the prosperity of the country they can collectively make a delicious broth which will include mutual understanding and respect for every single individual.
