PTV questioned for live coverage of concert in Bahria Town
The Pakistan Television’s (PTV) coverage of a Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s concert in Bahria Town came under scrutiny at a parliamentary session here recently.
Senator Zahid Khan of Awami National Party (ANP) raised an objection in the Upper House of the Parliament, questioning whether PTV’s was justified in using its equipment and resources to record “Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Show” organized by Bahria Town on April 16.
He inquired whether the tickets for the show were sold for Rs15,000, and if so, whether the revenue from the sale provided to PTV or not.
He also questioned whether it was a fact that the show is now being purchased by PTV despite the fact the channel’s equipment and machinery were used for the recording.
Responding to the objections, Federal Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan said Rahat is an icon of music industry and every TV channel wants to broadcast his shows on its screen.
Awan, in her written reply, stated that an agreement was signed between Bahria Town and PTV, according to which “PTV will provide technical facilities for the recording, while all other expenses such as venue charges, payment to artists, lighting and food arrangement would be borne by the organizers”.
The minister said it was also agreed that a joint marketing campaign will be launched for the show and the income generated from the campaign will be divided fifty-fifty for the first telecast. “It is also important to mention that certain artists like Rahat are only available on certain dates which are pre-booked with the producers and sponsors,” the reply stated.
As per the agreement, PTV has the show’s rights for one year and it is not required to share revenues for subsequent broadcasts with Bahria Town, explained the reply. Bahria Town was also responsible for providing the show in edited form, which was then broadcast on PTV, it added. Awan’s reply also noted that Rahat is one of the leading singers of Pakistan and has great attraction for the market.
