The joint venture between the state-run Pakistan Television (PTV) and Zee TV surfaced in the Upper House of the Parliament with Federal Information and Broadcasting Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan calling it an open business deal having no cultural repercussions for the society.

Responding to an adjournment motion moved by Prof Khursheed Ahmed of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Awan told the House that the joint venture between the two media entities was purely to broadcast the sports activities by making it clear that Zee Group was part of Ten Sports, which has been broadcasting the sports activities for a long time.

Terming the reports in a section of press on this joint venture uncalled for, she said a particular channel when could not succeed to acquire the landing rights was now making hue and cry over it by publishing a fabricated story.

Firdous Ashiq Awan said that like a private media channel, PTV also went in the bidding and won the landing rights for sports activities through Zee TV, which he called would not have any cultural implications as being feared as it was solely for airing the sports activities.

He questioned as if the deal was against the national interest then why that particular channel went for bidding. She also pointed out that this particular media group was also airing Indian contents in its transmissions.

The JI Senator said that PTV should not provide a channel to Zee TV to penetrate locally as it would have serious political and cultural implications. However, he said that he had no objection if the minister thought there was no hidden agenda behind this joint venture.

Senator Tariq Azeem called for a quid pro quo action from the Indian side by allowing the Pakistani channels in the neighboring country if the same is being given to Indian channels.
