The ‘Humsafar’ fever!
Log in to social networking websites on a Saturday evening and you can’t help but notice Twitter, Facebook and Youtube flooded with comments about ‘Humsafar’. The drama serial on HUM TV has more than 135,000 Facebook fans and it is topping the charts everywhere. Fawad Khan and his character of Asher are perhaps the most popular topics for young girls on a Saturday night. Daily Times catches up with Fawad Khan as he spills some secrets about his ‘Humsafar’ experience.
Fawad Afzal Khan who started his journey as a musician in the Entity Paradigm band has worked on numerous projects in varying capacities.
He has even starred in Shoaib Mansoor’s much-acclaimed movie ‘Khuda Ke Liye’ but regardless of all his earlier work, ‘Humsafar’ has brought him to a new level of success. Ironically, Fawad reveals that he was very reluctant about this one, “Momina from Momal productions wanted me to do this role. She was constantly pushing me to do it, but I kept avoiding it. I seriously didn’t know that it would turn out to be what it has. It was all very unexpected. I thought it would just be ‘a good show’ because of all the elements in it, but I didn’t anticipate this great a response.” Fawad’s singing and acting skills have being acknowledged by all ever since he stepped into the industry. Talking about his two talents he says, “Acting and singing are two different forms of performing art. You can’t just pick any musician and make them into an actor.” However, Fawad does admit that being known by the masses means that you get audiences for the first viewing, “but it certainly does not assure sustainability of audience. Your talent does that bit.” Fawad sings praises about the Humsafar cast. According to him, the drama’s cast is the strongest point because the story and screenplay tends to be similar in a number of dramas. The story is around three characters: Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan and Naveen Waqar.
While in the drama, two girls are interested in Fawad, in reality many more are. Fawad feels honoured that so many young and old girls watch the show because of him. He credits them for the massive success of the serial. Fawad, who plays the much-loved character of Asher, feels that every actor contributes a part of him or her self into the character that they’re playing on screen, “There are elements of Asher that I’ve used from my life.” Fawad discloses that this was an easy role for him because, “It was simply putting on a tie and a suit and being stiff about it.” When asked how he can relate to the character he simply laughed, “Me and Asher are very different. My wife says she can’t imagine me sitting and punching keys at the office. That’s probably because I’m the kind of person who doesn’t follow a fixed routine.” After a brief pause Fawad was able to come up with one similarity between him and the character he plays, “I used to have temper issues and I’ve tried to use my past experience as I play the role of Asher.” Fawad claims to have overcome his temper issues and he is happy to share some tips with us, “managing temper comes with age mostly, but the basic thing is that you should find a way of venting your anger in a non-offensive way”.
The one person who has probably benefited the most from Fawad’s anger management strategies is his real-life humsafar. Fawad and his wife have been together for 14 years and he is grateful that she is a part of his life, “It gives me a sense of completion. At the end of the day if anything goes wrong, I go home knowing that there is someone who will listen to me even if no one else does.”
